We were just three schoolkids; three schoolkids oblivious to the fact that we had the power to save the world. Before we came across the InnovateSA competition, growing Spirulina was just an extra activity that we did after school, as not once did it come to mind that the green slimy substance that we carried around school could possibly be the cure to malnutrition worldwide.
For years, people have been trying to find methods to overcome the reality that is malnutrition, unaware that just a gram of this micro algae, consumed for a few short weeks, could relieve the stresses of this problem. Spirulina is a superfood that contains approximately 60-70% protein, as well as a high percentage of all the other required nutrients that one needs to make it through the day.
Malnutrition is a problem that we have identified, that is already a reality in Africa, that is expected to get worse as the availability of food and water is expected to decrease tremendously in the years to come. This condition affects the physical, mental and intellectual growth of those who suffer from it, including children, and as children are said to be the leaders of tomorrow, we can only imagine what detrimental effects this can have on our future, if our kids don't grow to the best of their ability.
Malnutrition is a result of the lack of the required daily nutrients consumed in the correct portions. This may be due to many reasons, with poverty being one of them. Our plan is to incorporate Spirulina into the daily diets of malnourished children of underprivileged or rural communities, who follow a starch based diet, in hopes that this will relieve the stresses thereof. Our project aims at eradicating malnutrition and improving the state of health of everyone, worldwide.
Innovate South Africa has provided a platform for this to be possible, and we would therefore like to acknowledge them for that. We are aware of the fact that we cannot do this alone, and have taken it upon ourselves to recruit those who share in our ideology.
We don't just want to feed our children, we want to feed our future, and hope that you too, would like to help in making this venture a reality.
